Welcome, traveller, to my master's ship, the Jormungandr! I am called Eowils, loyal ćsc-berend (spear-bearer) to the hauld, Amleth Waetling. Born on his father's longship between Jutland and Jórvík, Amleth was weaned upon a life í-viking from infancy. His childhood was spent on campaigns in England and Ireland and at court in Trondelag. When he came of age, he was given his own ship and crew. Since, he has mostly sailed the trade route between Jórvík and Dyflin.
Amleth is the son of Grímalf Waetling, a Jómsviking and grandson of Gorm the Old. His mother, Herdis, is the daughter of Sigurđr Hákonarson, Jarl of Hlađir and self-appointed King of Norway. From his mother's family he is of the Sćming race, the legendary Sons of Odin.
Among his félag, Amleth is a reputed skald, gifted for his way with words and haunting melodies, which he plays upon his Glee-wood (harp). Amleth's songs often have wondrous characteristics. They are sometimes prophetic, other times meant to incite the savage berserkergang within his companions, and still other times thought to actually cause considerable damage themselves. He is sometimes called by various kennings, including Arrow-tongue. One tale tells of how with a powerful cry, Amleth toppled the timber walls of a Slavic fortress.
Lately, Amleth had been among the Varangian Guard in Constantinople. To the Saracens, he is the legendary Sadin al Hamaddah, "the Singer of Destruction", and they have lately imprisoned him. News of his death is now on its way to his wife in Dubh Linn.
