Welcome to my Domus!
I am Valentine, one of 3 that you future lovers will base your February holiday on. I died a long time ago (around year 270) but still live on in the hearts of young and old lovers everywhere.
In my day, we celebrated another holiday during this time of year, Lupercalia, intended to celebrate the ritual beginning of spring and dedicated to Faunus. Young ladies hoping for the blessing of fertility would place their names in an urn, where eligible bachelors would hopefully choose them. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and salt and wheat would be sprinkled throughout. You see, this time of year was always one for lovers.
I was the sender of the first of what you now call Valentines, to my own love while I was in prison many years ago, by signing it 'from your Valentine'. I was martyred in death, and Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be Valentines day in year 498.
I am also the patron saint of those suffering or living with epilepsy.
