The Silures -
The Silures put up a fierce resistance to the Roman conquest of about AD 48 and were only eventually subdued by Sextus Julius Frontinus in a series of campaigns in about 78 AD.

A legionary fortress (Isca Silurum, Caerleon) was built in the midst of tribal territory. Their town Caerwent (Venta Silurum) 6 miles west of Chepstow became a Romanized town. An inscription shows that under the Roman Empire it was the capital of the Silures.

The territory of the Silures later became the Welsh Kingdom of Gwent, Brycheiniog, Gwynllwg and Glamorgan.
