SEE-AT-LA
Anglicized pronunciation in the Lushootseed dialect. His name was originally spelled See-Yahtlh by the Indians, but the guttural sounds used in his real name could not be reproduced by English speaking settlers, so Dr. Maynard suggested to smooth it out by changing it to Sealth. However, there is no th sound in the Puget Sound Salish language. The spelling Sealth on the leader's 1890 grave marker was probably an effort to render the pronunciation more correctly: see-alth - the l sound is like a slurred pronunciation of the tl in "little." The result of this effort toward accuracy has been the spread of a completely inaccurate version of the Chief's name.
