I to my perils of cheat and charmer
Came clad in armour by stars benign.
Hope lies to mortals and most believe her,
But man's deceiver was never mine.
(A.E. Housman)
Greetings! I am Ælfwine, son of Ælfred, the friend of the spirits, since before the beginning of time in the mind of the Drihten. I am an enquiring Saxon with a quarter of Breton blood and a Pelagian outlook on life. The manifold wonders of humankind are too great for me to believe they would be lost without Grace. I prefer to consider the Grace of my Drihten as a free gift to live by and be glad and grateful of.

Though I come from Cantium in Britannia, my family name refers to my distant kinship with the royal family of Denmark. I am still studying the precise relationship. My given name is generally pronounced ALF-wyn-uh, despite the attractive but only visual assonance with "wine". It is Alboin among the Lombards, and, incidentally, Elendil in Quenya. Speaking of which, some of you have wondered about my avatar: it is the image of a worthy warrior who looks very much the way I was as a lad, fighting on the Bloody Beaches of Britannia. Then I left the island, learned to read and cut my hair the Roman way.
You can usually find me at the Red Boar Tavern, drinking and partying. Lately, however, I was seized by the impulse to start travelling again and ended up at Widsith's Meodoheall, where I met again Thidrek Amaligg - whom I had befriended as a lad at the Boar - now a grown man, and seeking vengeance...
My 19th century counterpart is having the time of his death - er, life - at Drakesheath. What is his secret? What hideous mystery will he uncover about himself?
 Lately, through a series of unexplainable circumstances, I've adopted none else than Titus Pullo, worthy legionary of the Thirteenth! He's a good drinker and a good man, that one...
But my adventures go on... in one guise or another, in one world or another...
Swa hi bylde forð | bearn Ælfrices,
wiga wintrum geong, | wordum mælde,
Ælfwine þa cwæð, | he on ellen spræc:
"Gemunan þa mæla | þe we oft æt meodo spræcon,
þonne we on bence | beot ahofon,
hæleð on healle, | ymbe heard gewinn;
nu mæg cunnian | hwa cene sy.
Ic wylle mine æþelo | eallum gecyþan,

So called them forth | the child of Ælfric,
warrior in winters young | words uttered,
Ælfwine then said, | he with strength spoke:
"Remember the speeches | we oft before mead spoke,
when we on the bench | boasts claimed,
heroes in the hall | about hard struggle:
Now may we know | who bold shall be.
I wish my noble lineage | to all be known,
that I was of Mercia | mighty kin;
was my grandfather | Ealhelm named,
wise alderman | worldly wealthy.
Nor shall these people's | thanes complain
that I from this army | wish to fare,
home seeking, | now my liege lies dead
hewn down in battle. | To me is that harm greatest:
he was both my kinsman | and my lord."
Then he went forth, | the feud remembering,
then he with spear-point | struck one of them,
a seaman in their host, | who on the ground lay dead
killed by his weapon. | Onward his friends he drove,
kinsmen and comrades, | that they go forth.
