I have been studying Caesar for a long time. I think Plutarch poisoned the well badly, and Shakespeare did not help.
Occam's Razor should be applied to everything Caesar. The simplest explanation is that he did what he did for the reasons he said he did them. And his reasons were good.
Rome was a place to go for Glory. The Glory of Rome. All Caesar did was what everyone was doing.
Everyone was vying for greatness. The unforgivable fact is that Caesar outstripped them all so gloriously -- or is that maddeningly -- that they had to pull him down.
Two thousand years later, the world still doesn't know. Caesar is the Greatest Story Never Told. I'm happy to have a chance to chat with others about all this...the Tall Poppy Story of All Time.
