I am of the Curtius family. As Verania the Vestal Priestess tells in SPQR:
On a spot in the Forum, long ago, a great chasm opened up. The Romans labored to fill in the abyss, but to no avail. The priests consulted the gods and declared that only a sacrifice of Rome's chief strength would close the ground. The young soldier Marcus Curtius came forward saying: Men of Rome, is anything of greater value to the nation than a brave man, armed in her defense? Then Curtius hurled himself, on horseback and in full armor, into the chasm, and the ground closed above him. It is said that the abyss opened up in the area of the former swamp, the Lacus Curtius, which had been drained by the Cloaca Maxima, a huge vaulted sewer system which crosses underneath the Forum.
