The great porticoes of the Augustan era were places where people could escape the sun under the colonnades, take leisurely walks, talk with friends, or enjoy displays of artwork brought to Rome as the spoils of conquest. The Saepta and the surrounding Porticus Argonautarum and Porticus Meleagri were each home to famous sculpture groups, and the porticoes were decorated with paintings.

In addition to the public displays, the courtyard of the Saepta between the great porticoes was used by artists and craftsmen to display their work to visitors. Sculptors, painters, antique dealers, jewelers, bronze workers and others set up stalls in the open space.

This thread is created to provide an open space for the display or discussion of the art of ancient Rome:

    • Create an original work to share with other visitors and post it below. We especially welcome themes related to the Argonauts, Greek heroes, or the Saepta and Roman virtues.
    • Create a special exhibit for this thread. Contact the curator here.
    • Leave a comment about the famous art of ancient Rome or the treasures brought to Rome by conquest.
