The barbarians are once again at the gates of Rome!

455: Rome is Sacked!
Overview:
Valentinian III has been assassinated on the orders of the senator Petronius Maximus. Petronius usurps the Emperor's position, plans to marry the Empress Eudoxia and marry his son to Eudoxia's eldest daughter who had been promised to Huneric, son of the Vandal king Geiseric. Geiseric sees this as an invalidation of the peace treaty he had with Valentinian. The Empress Lucinia Eudoxia, in a desperate ploy to avoid marriage to the man who had her husband murdered, sends a message to Geiseric begging him to come to Rome. Geiseric decides to do just that. He sails his fleet from Carthage directly to Rome. He is intercepted by Pope Leo I who asks Geiseric not to destroy the city. Geiseric agrees and the gates of Rome are thrown open to the Vandal king and his men. For fourteen days the city is exposed to the barbarian menace. There is a great deal of looting and devastation, but very few buildings are burned and violence is limited. (Of course, Petronius Maximus tries to escape the impending invasion but is, himself, murdered by angered citizens.) And naturally, the Empress and her two daughters are taken hostage.
