~~ In ancient Rome, when you had a message for the public, you scratched it on a wall.
|
Graffiti inscriptions have been found on the walls of ancient ruins, namely the Roman catacombs and Pompeii. It was not only the Greeks and Romans that produced graffiti, the Mayan site of Tikal also has ancient graffiti. Viking graffiti also survives in Rome and at Newgrange Mound in Ireland, and a Varangian scratched his name (Halvdan) in runes on a banister in the Hagia Sophia at Constantinople. Throughout history graffiti were a form of communication to express opposition to social mores, heartbreak, popular beliefs, political propaganda and/or distaste for an enemy.
See: History of graffiti and Examples of graffiti Break out the spray paint folks. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to create your own original graffiti using the "walls" below or you can create your own "wall."
