The Panathenaea was held every year at the height of summer, on the 28th day of the month of Hecatombaion. The Great Panathenaea had been held every year since 566 BC.

The Panathenaic Games was only one of several great religious sporting events held in Greece. The Pythian Games were held at Delphi. The Isthmian Games were held at Isthmia [near Corinth]. The Delian Games on Delos, the Nemean Games held at Nemea, and the most important were the Olympic Games at Olympia. these were Panhellenic and open to all Greeks. The Panathenaic Games were Athenian only. The main events were the same, though each of the Games had it's own special event. All of these games were for men only. Married women were forbidden to even watch them. There were however, special games held at Olympia for women only. These were held in honor of Hera, the queen of the gods.
