Stories, folklores, myths
Kamishibai (紙芝居), literally "paper drama", is a form of storytelling that originated in Japanese buddhist temples in the 12th century, where monks used e-maki (picture scrolls) to convey stories with moral lessons to a mostly illiterate audience. It endured as a storytelling method for centuries, and enjoyed a revival in the 1920s through the 1950s*.
Apart from the professional kamishibai-shi, ordinary people all over Japan told various minwa (folktales), and here you will find some of them: mukashi banashi (tales of long-ago), densetsu (legends), obake banashi (ghost stories) and seken banashi (tales about the world). I hope you enjoy the stories, and if you know of any other Japanese folktales, please feel free to add them *smiles*
