    The Calumet Ceremony

In the late seventeenth century the Calumet Ceremony came to be known as the peace pipe. It spread from the Pawnees to the Sioux and the Algonquins. The Iraquois adopted it in the form of the Eagle Dance. It became the means for arresting the aggression of war parties, mediating peace, and created representatives among each party who were responsible for maintaining the peace.

The calumet were gifts to cover the dead, slaves to replace the dead, and was a mechanism for peace.

Many tribes, among them the Cherokeee, Iroquois, Iowa and Choctaw, performed Eagle Dances for many different reasons. They created friendships ensured a succesful hunt or battle. They cured sickness , particularly "eagle sickness" and made peace between antagonistic tribes. They all had in common dancers who moved and dressed like eagles. They carried the wand with the eagle tailfeathers attached. The Eagle Dance was made up of a series of songs and dances, and included the recitation of the brave deeds of the most courageous warriors.
