Ricimer, Oadacer, and other Germanic or Gothic leaders were essentially in control of the Western Emperors and their Empire for much of the 5th century. Odoacer finally deposed the last puppet-Emperor, the young Romulus Augustulus, in 476, traditionally taken as the end of the Western Empire.
