Patera
The patera, which is surely part of the family of the argentum potorium,
is a holder the function of which is not exactly known.
An hypothesis is that it was a pail, used to move liquids among different containers.
They used to have fine decorations on the handle.
All the paterae below were retrived in Pompeii.
This patera comes from the 'Casa del Menandro' and has decorations showing a hunt scene with gold inserts, as can be seen in the detail below.
Below is a detail of a patera retrieved in 'Casa del Fauno' in Pompeii,
showing a naked figured identified with Mercury.
