Other objects in ministerium
Aside from those presented in the other threads,
a wide number of other objects were also part of the ministerium:
the Colum, the Simpula, the Ligula, the Olpe and many others.
Colum
The colum - a strainer - was an indispensable instrument in the wine "ritual".
It was used to filter the wine when pouring it from one holder - maybe an
amphora or an olpe - to another - a cantharus, a calathus, a scyphus, etc.
This colum, retrieved from the area around the Vesiuvio, has an hemispherical body.
Its holes form geometrical designs with concentric circles that intersecting
in the center form a star with rays.
Simpulum
The Simpulum was used to draw liquids and move them from one vessel to another - usually from the one where the wine rested to the drinking cup.
Olpe
Pitchers were commonly used and part of the ministerium.
Ligula, trulla and cochlearia
A variety of spoons have been found in Pompeii.
Their use differed as their names.
Set of ligulae from the House of Menandro.
A trulla and a set of cochlearia from the House of Menandro.
A unique ligula found in the Vesuvian area and dated between century I BC and IAD.
Plates
A variety of plates were used by ancient Romans.
Silver plates were often finely decorated.
Below there are two plates from Ercolaneum. Their size is 20cm diameter, 1.8cm height and they weigh 228gr.
Next to them is a detail from a plate retrieved in the area around the Vesuvio.
This plate is entirely decorated in its interior with six small palms starting form the center.
Salt and pepper
Romans liked to have decorated salt and pepper holders.
Other objects
Below you'll find various objects used during banquets.
BTW, did you think we invented egg-holders?
