Before there was Rome, there was the remarkable culture of the Etruscans.
Rome herself did not want to acknowledge her debt to the Etruscan civilization that influenced and preceded her - with the exception of the Emperor Claudius, who made that his area of expert study. For discussion of the Etruscan influences on Roman civilization.
