William the Conqueror invaded Scotland in 1072. He rode to the Firth of Tay, where he met with his fleet of ships. Malcolm Canmore - the Ceanmor (literally Big Head) who slayed MacBeth to become king - submitted, paid homage to William and surrendered his son Duncan as a hostage. Thus began the tangled web of whether the Scottish Crown owed allegiance to the English king. ![]() |
