    (October)This month celebrated the greatest number of festivals.

    On the 7th took place the Pyanopsia, a feast in honor of Apollo. This was connected with sowing, and was accompanied by an odd and ancient ritual. The god was offered a dish of beans and other vegtables, all mingled with weaten flour; a special branch of olive, the eiresione, was then carried in a procession, wrapped in wool and filled with first-fruits -clearly a talisman- while cheerful boys sang:

    'The eiresione bears figs and fat loaves,

    A small pot of honey, and oil to anoint it,

    A cup of neat wine to befuddle and lull it.'
