An annual contest to celebrate the best places to 'live' in AncientWorlds! Current contest for BEST PLACES IN ANCIENTWORLDS rules below. Winners announced in early July, 2008!
On December 12, 2004, awards were handed out to the best 'hoods of AncientWorlds, within three months of the 'hoods feature being inaugurated. The winners were:
HELLAS - Attica
EGYPT - The Nome of the White Wall
CELTIA - Eire
ROME - Italia Province, Pompeii
ORIENT - India - Mohenjo-Daro

On April 2, 2007, the second "round" of "Best Places" awards were handed out, in this case 'hoods which were eminently beautiful and eminently 'liveable'. The winners were:

North America: Arid Lands, Plateaus and Basins: Ancient Pueblo Region
Rome's Italia: City of Rome: Mons Aventinus
In 2008, a new contest begins! Check out the Entry Rules below, and spend your summer time dreaming and building a new new city for your world. We will again be accepting nominations from all citizens of AncientWorlds, so if you know a beautiful 'hood that deserves to win, list it here (with the URL, please!) by the close of nominations, June 30, 2008. We will announce the winners over the Fourth of July weekend!
A new feature in 2007, a category of "Special Places" was added to celebrate the best of the nominations, even if they weren't in the top three winners. The "Special Places" for 2007 included:

BEST PLACES OF ANCIENTWORLDS CONTEST, 2008
Contest Rules and General Information
-
A Gold, bronze and silver medal will be given to the three worlds winning with top votes for the best development of a given ‘hood, based on the following criteria, all of which are equally important. Those 'hoods that don't qualify for the top three awards, but still reflect the excellent qualities we are looking for, will be given a "Special Places" award.
- Nominations may be an entire city or area (for example, the city of Eridu in Sumeria, or just one district of Eridu). This is more common in large cities with multiple districts. Be aware that nominating only a single district of a city 'hood may be given less weight by the judges when it is in equal competition with complete cities where multiple districts are developed.
- The text in the ‘hood should reflect the history and culture of the hood, and the districts should show some character on their own (i.e., all the ‘hood districts have some personality or historic information which differentiates them from each other)
- Bonus points will be given for ‘hoods which show active posts and citizen involvement - parties, events, contests, or whatever.
- Bonus points will be given for creative visual design, especially if that design says something about the culture and identity of the ‘hood. Equal bonus points will be given for creative history and sense of humor.
- Bonus points will also be given if articles attached to the ‘hood expand upon its history or culture, or if creative use of properties (i.e., shops, public buildings, etc.) expand upon life activities in the ‘hood.
In short, we are looking not only for attractive hoods that teach us something about the city and its culture, but for ‘hoods whose leaders have gotten citizens active in the hood discussions, parties, or other activities.
We will not have a "sign up" contest thread this year, as 'hoods are usually the creation of many people and no one person should 'win' for that hood. Instead, this competition is for the glory of creating something ancient and beautiful online. Please list the URLS and the names of the nominations in your post!
Nominations will not be accepted after June 30, 2008. The winners will be announced during the Fourth of July weekend.
Good luck!
