Wrongly ascribed to Marie Antoinette, the statement "let them eat cake" or Qu'ils mangent de la brioche was uttered a hundred years previously by Marie Thérèse of Spain, Queen of France and wife to Louis XIV. An unfortunate statement that underscored the distain with which the French royalty regarded those they ruled and exploited.
