Within 40 years of Columbus's discovery of America, the Spanish had overturned two rich empires, the Aztecs and Incas. They and the Portuguese dominated the 'New World' for over a century more, but by 1700 the French and English held sway over much of North America. New colonial societies were emerging, however, which were to cast off European control.
