The Mysteries of Eleusis
According to ancient myth, Hades, the god of the underworld, had carried off Kore (Persephone) to his kingdom. Her mother Demeter protested, and a compromise was agreed by which Kore would spend six months of each year with Hades and six months with her mother. A shrine to Demeter and Kore known as the Eleusinium was built on the Panathenaic Way below the Athenian Acropolis. The main sanctuary remained at Eleusis. The Eleusinian Mysteries became famous throughout Greece, and was an important part of the ancient Athenian public religion.
