Tortuga Jamaica

Tortuga (Spanish for “tortoise,” as the island was named for its shape) is located in the Caribbean near Cuba and Jamaica. It is about 20 to 25 miles long and was first discovered and named by the Spanish. The French government of Tortuga opened up their shores and harbors to nearly any ship that happened that way, as long as they were not Spanish. Many pirates and buccaneers came by the island, since they were not chased away and were allowed to stay. The island even became known as a base of operation for pirates.

The French government of Tortuga allowed pirates to stay on the island and gave pirates permission to raid any Spanish ship that came near the island. Any booty that was collected from the ships was to be shared with the French government, but was also partially profit for the pirates. Tortuga was also known to the pirates as a great place to spend their loot, through drinking and gambling. The French governor even imported hundreds of prostitutes to Tortuga to keep the pirates happy and coming back to the island. The pirates were what the French used to protect the island from the Spanish.

Tortuga isrenowned for its friendliness to pirates, as well as being the favorite place for pirates to congregate, spend money, and freely enjoy each other’s company without threat. So dock yer ship, here in Tortuga.
