A thread for the line-by-line examination and discussion of the great classic by Master Sun.

Pa Fing: The Art of War

Sun Tzu: Ping Fa (Master Sun on the Art of Warfare)
The Oldest Military Treatise in the World

Sun Tzu: Ping Fa is arguably the most important military treatise ever written. Penned more than 2,000 years ago by Sun Wu, a general to the first sovereign of the Chinese Zhou Dynasty, the Art of Warfare was originally intended solely for the military elite of the day. Yet, it has been studied and its principles applied by many others throughout the centuries, from Japanese samurai to modern-day business men. By reading it, a person can learn to apply the principles to any number of situations that require strategy in order to win or to avoid calamity. So, in the hope that our membership will find it fascinating, if not helpful, we will present the entire book here in installments interspersed (hopefully) with discussions of the text.

Note: the text of the original 13 chapters will be taken mostly from the Guttenburg Press translation with additions or clarifications from other translated sources. Of necessity, information about the additional 5 chapters will come from the Classics of Ancient China translation.
