Father, forgive them: for they knew not what they did. The Venetians and French and Italian warriors of the Fourth Crusade thought they were serving State, Church, and themselves and their posterity. Instead, they inflicted a mortal wound upon Byzantium, and perhaps ensured that the Moslem tide would ultimately sweep far into Europe.
