The Comneni (1081-1185 C.E.)
|
|
The House of Comneni stabilized and partially restored the Empire's position in Anatolia after the disastrous defeat by the Turks at Manzikert in 1071. In the end, however, Manuel I Comnenus (1143-1180) overextended the Empire, and his charismatic but vengeful cousin and successor Andronicus I Comnenus (1182-85) started the Empire on the disastrous course that ended with the arrival of the Fourth Crusade. A collateral branch of the Comneni family managed to re-establish itself along the southeastern shores of the Black Sea, however, where the Empire of Trebizond (1205-1461) outlasted even Constantinople itself.
