Northwest culture developed along the Pacific slope.
Early hunting and fishing traditions developed here at least ten thousand years ago.
When a man eats salmon by the
river, he signs the salmon song. It is
in the river in the roasting in the
spearing in the sharing in the shoring
in the shaking shining salmon. It is
in the song too.
North Coast people considered salmon to be a race of eternal beings who lived underwater. In spring they took on fish forms and swanupriver in huge numbers. The first salmon caught each year was placed on an alter, facing upstream. Prayers were said. After each villager sampled the roasted flesh, the intact skeleton was returned to the river. There it swam back to the underwater world of the salmon people.
