The Vikings' martime technology carried them to settle in the Shetlands, Orkneys, Iceland, Greenland and then on to North America.
As the technology of Viking ships improved, the Vikings sailed and settled further and further afield. Their influence is still seen in the people of the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but in Iceland people still trace their ancestry to the first waves of Viking settlers.
Climatic conditions favoured a brief flourishing of Viking settlements on Greenland, which in turn led to short-lived settlements in what is now Canada and the United States.
Given their wanderlust, and the means to literally sail to new horizons, it is possible that the Vikings explored even further than we currently have evidence for....
