The art of the woodblock print
Having its origins in Chinese poetry and Buddhist philosophy, the word 'ukiyo-e', meaning pictures of the floating or sorrowful world, is the term used for the art of the woodblock print, a genre of printmaking which flowered in the 17th to mid-19th centuries in Edo, Japan.
