Palenque, the capital of the Palenque Kingdom (known as B'aakal), is located at the northern edge of the Chiapas highlands. Through the history of the Maya, Palenque shared cooperative relations with Tikal, but antagonistic ones with Calakmul, Tonina and Piedras Negras and its history reflects the same political situations as its contemporaries - the decline and subsequent emergence of royal lines striving to consolidate their power.
