Fashions did indicate status. They still do. In ancient Eiru, colors and quantity of material was the biggest indicator. Only a king or a druid could wear five colors for instance and a poor farm hand would only wear one and that probably a natural weave. Ireland was usually a bit behind fashions on the continent. Commonly they wore leines of saffron linen. That's knee length tunic with very full, flowing sleeves. The sleeves were used to carry things. The leine was usually belted up by men but women wore them ankle length and covered by a bathrobe like jacket. Men wore trews, pants much like our pajama pants. Sounds lovely doesn't it?
