Public thread for discussion of Germanic languages
The linguistic family which defines the ancient Germanic peoples had three main branches:
North Germanic - which gave rise to Old Norse, the language group of the Vikings, and was the ancestor of modern Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic.
East Germanic - the branch which included Gothic, Vandalic, Gepidic and Burgundian. All these languages are extinct and have no modern descendents, though Third Century Gothic is preserved in the Bible translation of Wulfilas and this is the oldest recorded Germanic language.
West Germanic - which included Old English, Old High German and its sub-dialects, Old Frisian, Old Saxon and which gave rise to modern German, Dutch and English.
This thread is for the discussion of all ancient Germanic languages, their influence on the languages of today and their impact on the post-Roman world. Resources for studying and learning languages such as Old Norse, Old Enlish and Gothic can also be posted here.
