    A wonderful town

Of course Palenque isn't the real name for this large city. It is the Spanish translation of Otulum, by which name the city was known at the time the Spaniards came around. We cannot answer for sure what the name was in the Classical Maya period. What we do know is that it was the capital of the B'aak kingdom and that it's centre was probably called Lakham Ha (Big Water).
