Celebrated Stoic philosopher and author, Marcus Aurelius was dominated by increasing attacks upon all Rome's key frontiers.
121-180 A.D. Adopted by Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius broke the cycle of adopting unrelated successors to the Imperial throne, paving the way for the rise of his incompetent son, Commodus. He also fought wars throughout the Empire as threats appeared on all its key frontiers, while composing his "Meditations," a classic of Stoic philosophy.
