Antoninus "Pius" ruled wisely and well for 23 years, choosing Marcus Aurelius as his successor.
86-161 A.D. Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Antoninus had been one of Hadrian's advisers and former proconsul of Asia. Adopted by Hadrian, he succeeded in 138 and ruled until 161, when he died of natural causes, known as "Pius" from the Senate's recognition of his sense of duty towards Hadrian's memory and accomplishments.
