The Festival of Beltane Beltane is Anglicization of the Irish ?Bealtane? or the Scottish ?Bealtuinn?. It?s derived from the words ?tene?, meaning fire and possibly ?bel? meaning brilliant or bright. It could also come from the word ?bil tene? or lucky fire because to jump between the two fires was said to bring good fortune, prosperity and healthy livestock.
The start of open pasturing, the beginning of summer. When the welcome warmth of the sun’s heat began to promote the growth of livestock and crops. Beltane is the other pivotal extreme of the Celtic year and is a time of reawakening. A time of fertility and unbridled merry making, when young and old would spend the night making love. Men and women joined in a symbolic marriage of the sun and earth
