    female priesthood

Although the role of women in ancient public life is considered to have always been one "behind the men", female priesthoods (mostly concerning the worship of goddesses) seem to have played an important role in various ancient societies. In Rome, Vestal Virgins, for example, were considered of very high importance to the State Religion and they were always recruited out of the ranks of noble women: they were respected as highly as male magistrates, they had the right to vote and were the keepers of wills and sacred or worldly convenants. Vestals had the right to free slaves at sight. What more power could we wish for, girls...? LOL
