    Map of Northern Britain

    Yr Hen Ogledd

Yr Hen Ogledd or "The Old North" refers to the sub-Roman Brythonic kingdoms of what is now Northern England and Southern Scotland. It is postulated that they originated from the territory controlled by Cole Hen (Old King Cole). Some scholars speculate that the merry monarch of nursery rhyme fame was actually the last Roman Dux Britanniarum. He held military control over the entire northern part of Britain at the time of the Roman withdrawal. After his death, his lands were divided amongst his offspring, and became the kingdoms of the north. The Angles of Bernicia and Deira eventually overtook them, and all that remains of Hen Ogledd today are the poems of Aneirin and Taliesin.

The map to the right is, at best, a loose representation of the boundaries of the kingdoms. Historical evidence is sketchy, and considering the apoplectic temperament of the Northern Briton, the boundaries were somewhat fluid!
