How science is helping us to find out things about the past...
This thread is to be dedicated to information on how we know about the past through using scientific techniques. This could include dating methods (the approximate age of an object, as opposed to finding the best way to convince a member of the opposite sex to go out with us), excavation (not quite the fortune-and-glory approach employed by Indiana Jones), the authenticity of artifacts and arts (…that $100 original Rembrandt is just too good to be true…), etc. As the purpose of this thread is to promote discussions and understanding, and not intended to be a cheap cure for insomnia, it would be to everyone’s advantage if all the information is kept at an easy-to-understand level (no doctoral dissertations from MIT, please).
Hopefully, the information from this thread would help people to better understand how we know what we know (or why we don’t know more, or why we are not sure about what we know, or why we don’t want to know more…. Etc.)
This thread is not limited only to the realm of the New World. I am starting it here since, well, I am a proud citizen of Machu Picchu.
