    WHAT IS GRAAL?

    GRAAL (Germanic-Celtic Roleplay from Arthurian Accounts & Legends) is a cooperative roleplay project in Celtia and Germania, drawing from historical and geographic Arthurian research, early Welsh oral tradition, and later medieval literture (including Post-Vulgate materials like Thomas Malory).

    This is a roleplay environment that follows the AW rules of roleplay etiquette. While the writing is expected to be creative and original in nature, it is highly encouraged that the writer be familiar with the Post-Roman British setting in the 5th/6th centuries. While the actual date is left ambiguous, there should not be any suits of armor or jousting tournaments as such things would not be seen for several hundred years to come. Because of the magical nature of many Arthurian stories, a certain amount of the supernatural can be expected in the GRAAL stories. Dragons and unicorns appear in a few Arthurian stories. Using such beasts may be acceptable if used very allegorically (perhaps in a dream or a vision, where the line between the real world and the Otherworld becomes hazy).

    So much of what we love about the Arthurian legends is the medieval romance. We must have quests, lovers, and duels, as would make any great medieval adventure story. These romantic elements of the Post-Vulgate literature, such as Le Morte d'Arthur, are acceptable to integrate into the roleplay, as long as it is adapted to the context of the 5th/6th centuries, when the historical Arthur most likely lived.

    Please visit the various GRAAL Castles to read the different plotlines. For starters, action will take place at Camelot. As the story progresses, smaller story arcs will branch off into the other GRAAL Castle venues. Please post at this thread if you are interested in joining a story and wish to post. Let us know which character you wish to play and how that character will fit into the story, and I will update the Dramatis Personć below.

    While there are a vast number of characters considered "canonical" Arthurian figures, completely original characters are also encouraged. Some players may wish to create their characters from scratch drawing on research of 5th-century Britain. Aspects to consider in character development include social status (petty king, soldier, slave, tradesman, etc.), ethnicity (Briton, Gael, Pict, Angle, Saxon, Jute, etc.), and religion (Celtic pagan, Celtic Christian, Roman Christian, Jew, etc.).
