By morning’s light the whole of the war band was assembled by the gate of the keep, waiting for instruction from Fenian. I had my hands tight on my reins stopping Justice from stamping about with all of the other horses, ready, willing, and able to get on with this quest. ‘Round about Justice, my two wolfhounds, Thunder and Lightning were scampering about, as excited as the horses to get out of the keep and onto the road. After the whole of the party was assembled, Fenian, our war chief, came out and spoke to us. It was a quiet call to arms that made its importance yell through its quietness. Everyone there understood the need to retrieve the Rian. They also knew how personal this was for the new war chief, and they supported him in his assignment.
When the war chief’s speech was almost over, he divided the group into three groups: one to take the river and the caves along with it, another to take the hillside of the road, and the third to watch the horses and search the road itself. Luckily I fell assigned to Fenian’s group to search the river side of the road. ‘There will be more action there I do believe’ I told myself. When I turned my head and surprisingly saw the old wizard, Nevvyn riding towards our group on a borrowed mount. ‘Ahhhh, ‘I thought, ‘This suddenly becomes more interesting!’
The old man saw my dogs prancing around my horse and walked his horse…his borrowed horse towards me. He reached into the huge sleeve of his robe and pulled out a scarf…a woman’s scarf, presumably the scarf of the Rian. He tossed the scarf onto the earth between Thunder and Lightning as though he knew their instinct would be to sniff the cloth, looking for a scent to follow…which they did. Looking them in the eye, with no hesitation that they would not understand his command, he said to them, “Now, go find our Rian! NOW!” Having caught her scent and having understood the urgency in the old man’s command, Thunder and Lighting began to circle around; sniffing on the ground and in the air, until Lightning gave a hearty bark which was returned by Thunder. The two then went off together having caught the Rian’s scent. All eyes of our group were on Fenian. “We follow the dogs for now. I pray to the gods they make short work of this!
We were off, to what end I didn’t know, but I still felt the cold and the dark, and I believed that the Rian was still alive!
