    As the 'phone was off all day and we had no dial-up, I amused myself by making jam. We have two damson trees in the garden and I'd picked a bowl full that needed to be used up. So I made jam.

    And I wondered, as I stood at the stove, stirring the lovely dark red stuff, did the ancients know of jam? Did an ancient Greek housewife stand at her stove and watch over it, until that magic moment when it all "sets".

    Does anyone know if they ate jam?
