This is a new film directed by Milos Forman (AMADEUS). It may be based upon a novel. I have no information about that. If so, my apology for posting it here.

It is a lavish and stunning work about the rise and fall of an official of the Spanish Inquisition.

It takes place from the time of Goya to the advent of Napoleon.

Natalie Portman gives a wonderful performance playing both a beautiful young woman, who is tortured, and the daughter who never knew here.

My only problem with the movie was the makeup of the tortured woman. It was just obviously makeup. If may have been more effective to use another actress. Miss Portman's portrayal is excellent.

This is a very dramatic film about a dramatic period of sweeping history.
