This was celebrated every year and lasted for two days. Once every four years it was celebrated with greater solemnity. Then it lasted for four days. The victors of the athletic contests [torch-racers or lampadedromia] recived as prizes oil from Athena's sacred olive trees. It was in special amphoras known as 'panathenaika'. These were decorated on one side with the reprsentation of Athen Promachos (she who fights in the front rank) standing between two pillars. The other side showed the foot race. Afterwards came the great Panathenaic Procession. This is represented by a marble frieze on the parthenon. It started at Ceramicus and made it's way through the center of Athens. It reached the Acropolis bearing the embroidered robe of Athena's cult statue. The robe was made every year by special young girls. The procession included priests and representative of the civic body. Metics were included. All were marshalled into position and were escourted by the [epheboi]. When the reached the Acropolis the sacrificed four oxen and four sheep before the old temple of Athena Polias. ['Protector of the City'] and moved across to the great alter which stood befor the Parthnon. They slaughtered enough cows to feed the entire city.
