This was a combination of events consisting of discus, long jump, javelin, sprinting [stadion] and wrestling.

The Greek discus varied in weight and size. All contestans at any event used the same one, so it did not matter. The surviving examples are made of bronze, marble and lead.

The long jump was the only Greek jumping contest. It was different from the modern version. It is depicted in numerous vase paintings. The contestant carried special weights [halteres] which were swung forward to give greater forward motion. One found at Olympia weighs about 10 pounds. It is pretty certain that the athlete did not make a long run-up. The record jump is about 54 and one half feet. This suggests that it was some kind of a multiple jump.

The Greeks used a light elderwood javelin, with a throwing loop. This made it spin in flight. On course thows of hundreds of feet were possible. Sometimes it was done on horseback as a test for accuracy.
