The tradgey of Theseus and Ariadne plays a prominent role in the history and the mythology of the island of Delos. As a victorious hero Theseus, [The Prince of Athens] sets sail with Ariadne [The Princess of Crete] after defeating the Minotaur. Ariadne brings her goddess and her cult with her. She may have been a priestess of that cult, and her consort was a Dionysic one. Yet she fled her culture and it's traditions to be with a man she fell in love with. Then that man abandons her. There are many different interpretations of this. In trying to understand the deeper meaning and signfigance of myth, one must understand that the characters are archtypes that transend the historical era inwhich they evolved. They represent relationships that continualy reoccur in the human condition. They are meaningful because they are individuals that we can relate to. To understand this story one begins to understand how the personal can evolve into the impersonal. For Ariadne to survive she must learn to live and love in a higher octave. The love goddess changes and adapts as she sails accross her sea of dreams.
