I agree with your complaint about posting links in our Exhibits. The World Wide Web is an ever-changing landscape, and some of the best sites are too often here today and gone tomorrow, without any warning or trace left. The only thing we can do is to check the links periodically and remove the dead ones. Think of it as something like tending a garden. This sounds like a lot of work but if each person could take responsibility for maybe once a month checking their Galleries and other posts for links gone bad, it would help.
Another side of this is that if someone simply posts a link (and I am guilty of this myself) with only a few words of explanation, many times I still feel thirsty for more. This can be a good thing, because we want to inspire peoples' interests. Most of the time, though, it isn't enough. Our Galleries should offer more in-depth material than just a set of links. Article-type posts would be better.
Setting up our personal Galleries - and the other places in the Museum too - will take a lot of time and patience to get it just right. For example, I was thinking about putting together a slide show of different baskets to display in my Gallery, with information about the different ways they are made. This is an ambitious project and may take weeks or months to finish.
In "RL" I used to work at a museum and a few years ago I was involved with a group in creating and maintaining an online "Museum of Art". Unfortunately, as far as I know, that's another site that has vanished into the darkness of cyberspace. I was thinking of how we could plan events for MOTA to work the way things do in a real museum. We have our individual Galleries, which can be ongoing projects. How about planning some themed exhibits or "shows" that we can all work on together, or collaborate with a few other people? Two (or more) heads are always better than one.
