    The Maya isn't my 'specialty' so I'm not absolutely sure, but I don't think there is much class distinction between the "Elite" and the "Scribes" - scribes were high-rankers in Mayan society and probably mostly came from the almehen, or noble class, that held the top political and priestly roles. The term for a priest, ah k'in means "He of the Sun" or "He of the Days" (k'in means both "day" and "sun"), clearly indicating their role in keeping the calendar and making astronomical calculations.
