WAMPUM or Covenant Belt

This was presented by the U.S. government to the Iroquois in 1794 at the Pickering Treaty at Canandaigua, New York. The human figures, each linked by a short line represent the wampum belt itself. It forms a chain of friendship, which represented the alliance between the thirteen states and the Iroquoian confederacy. The central longhouse is the Iroquois Confederacy longhouse, and the large figures are the thirteen states.
